This week we celebrate Mother’s Day, a wonderful opportunity to say “thank you” to the ones who have nurtured us with compassion and love. We celebrate the blessings of parenthood and the joy of children on this day, and I rejoice with all for whom this is a welcome occasion. I also recognize that Mother’s Day can be a time of bittersweet reflection, silent suffering, or regret. Please be gentle with one another, and remember to celebrate all women who have blessed our lives. May we recognize the mothering spirit of God as we reflect on those who have shown us the gift of unconditional love.

MUSIC SUNDAY, MAY 20, 2018 ~ Please join us in honoring the music program here at First Church. The choirs are preparing special musical selections for that morning and there will be some musical surprises as well. Come, enjoy the music, and help us acknowledge the efforts of the musicians and others who give so faithfully of their time and talents to the worship experience throughout the year.

Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Opportunity – if anyone has interest in serving for a Saturday morning this summer at a Habitat for Humanity home construction site, please contact Pastor Joel very soon. We have an opportunity to partner with another local church and contribute to the work of building homes for people in need. The date will be determined in the near future, pending interest from our congregation to participate. Thank you!

Weeknights for Women ~ Ladies, Join us this summer as we engage in the video/study guide discussion of Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist. If you feel exhausted from the pressures and expectations of life, this group is for you. If not, and you’ve got it all together, then this group needs you all the more. We will meet Thursday evenings in the church lounge from 6:30-8:00. (June 21, 28, July 12, 19, 26). Please sign up in the gathering area. All participants will need the Present Over Perfect Study Guide. Reading the book Present Over Perfect is optional. Please pass this invitation on. Bring your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers. Peace – a state of calm and quiet (Webster)
Do we know and understand the background of our church stand on peace?
Do we diligently practice peace in our home?
Do we encourage our children to apply this peace in school?
Do we share this peace with friends?
Do we apply this peace in our church? In committee and leadership meetings?
Do we each encourage our children to study the information on Conscientious Objection? Do we assure our children of our support if they choose CO?
Do we have peace in our heart?
The Lord gives strength to his people, the Lord bless his people with peace. Psalms 29:11
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

LOOKING AHEAD. . . . . . . .
MAY 23, 2018 – Camp Eder Senior Day will be held Wednesday, May 23rd, the morning program will be a piano program by Leah Hileman. The afternoon program will be a nature craft. We will be painting pots and planting flowers in them.
The menu will be ham, parsley potatoes, corn, rolls/butter, salad, devil eggs glaze on the side, fudge brownie Sunday.
JUNE 9, 2018 – Kick-off Dinner for the Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, Sat., June 9th at 6:00 pm at Yoder’s in New Holland, PA. Entertainment by the Taylors, Gospel Music. If you have any questions about this event, see Jolene Zeigler.
JUNE 11 & 12, 2018 – 70TH Annual Women’s Camp Retreat, Camp Eder, Fairfield, PA ~ We are called to….. “PASS IT ON” Be the “Spark” – Monday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12th – Guest Speaker, Jill Hastings – Registration deadline is May 18, 2018, Late registrations will NOT be accepted. You can find a brochure and registration forms on the bulletin board. (Urgent Update: There is an error on the registration form. JUNE 28, 2018 – The 7th Annual Franklin County Golf Outing on Thursday, June 28th, held at the Chambersburg Country Club – 4 Person Scramble – 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Registration & Lunch – 1:00 p.m. Shotgun Start – Individual Golfer: $85 – Foursome: $320
Registration Deadline is June 16, 2018. Proceeds from this event support the Frances Leiter Center in Chambersburg and the work our therapists do with children who need help coping with loss, abuse, bullying, or other challenges that life has put in front of them. So come out, have a wonderful day of golf and fellowship and benefit a program that makes an amazing difference in children’s lives. Men’s and Mixed Divisions – Golfer registration includes box lunch, cart, greens fees, range balls, snacks, prizes and dinner following the tournament. Mulligans and Powerballs will be available. CONTACTING THE PASTOR: Pastor Joel can be reached most mornings in the church office Monday—Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Afternoons and evenings are set aside for visiting those in need, for meetings, and for other pastoral duties. Pastor Joel is also available for Pastoral Counseling by appointment. If you need to reach the pastor outside of office hours, his home phone number is (717) 318-5442, and his cell number is (717) 271-4888 . You can also email him atpastor@yorkfirst.org. By the way, HIPA laws prevent the hospital from contacting the pastor when you are admitted, so you will need to let hospital staff know that you would like the hospital to contact your pastor.
