Led by Pastor West, “‘A Service of Cornerstone Laying’ for the new church plant at Seventh Avenue and Sundale Drive, Haines Acres, York, Penna.” was held at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 19, 1965 at the northwest corner of the sanctuary. The choir stood west of the building, the speakers faced north and addressed the congregation who stood along Kingston Road facing the partially completed building structure. It was a bright, sunny, warm afternoon, a time when all speakers removed their suit coats. Prayer coverings were worn by a few women.
Those leading the Service included Milton M. Baugher, Moderator; Rev. M. Guy West, Pastor; Rev. David B. Bagwell, Assistant Pastor; Dr. John R. Herr, Building Committee Chairman; Robert H. Klucher, Cornerstone Laying Program Chairman; Stanley S. Dotterer, Director of the Choir; C. Holmes Royer, Leader of the Trumpeters, and Rev. Joseph M. Long, Tri-District Executive Secretary.
The Trumpet Fanfare gathered the group to worship. After a Call to Worship and an Invocation led by Dr. West, the Hymn, “The Church’s One Foundation” was sung. Moderator Baugher read the Scripture Lesson from I Corinthians 3:10-17, followed by a Prayer from Rev. Bagwell. The choir’s rendition of Macfarlane’s, “Open Our Eyes” preceded the Address by Rev. Joseph M. Long. Dr. John R. Herr listed the Cornerstone Items, followed by a Litany led by Robert H. Klucher as the Cornerstone was placed by Pastor West, Dr. Herr and others. The hymn, “On This Stone Now Laid With Prayer” by Pierpont-Pleyl, spoke of the church opening wide for the outcast and the poor, and to the heart of sin oppressed, Jesus Christ its cornerstone. After a Benediction, the Trumpet Postlude concluded the Service. This then became another milestone in the history of First Church.
