OCTOBER 15, 2016 ~ Brethren Heritage Festival: All are invited to the Brethren Heritage Festival at The Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, on the Elizabethtown College campus, between 1 and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 15. Children will enjoy crafts and games, art projects, huge old-fashioned bubbles and hands-on experiences like making cornhusk dolls. Special features include a quilting bee, acapella singing and more! Enjoy homemade treats like ice cream churned by a bicycle, apple butter on fresh bread and popcorn from the historic Reist popcorn wagon. OCTOBER 19, 2016 THROUGH NOVEMBER 2, 2016 ~ W.E. GATHER ~ “I love to tell the story” this favorite hymn, number 398 in our hymnal, will be our theme for this fall’s WE Gather. You might guess from the title that the theme will be sharing stories from our faith journeys. Wednesday Evenings, October 19th and will continue the following dates Oct. 26th and November 2nd. We will meet each Wednesday evening for a carry in supper starting at 6 and then a time of sharing starting at 7. We are looking for persons who are willing to share their faith stories. So look for the sign-up sheet in the narthex and pick a date. We have people signed up but we welcome more! Suggested Guidelines for sharing faith stories based on Hymn # 398 – “I Love to Tell the Story” 1) Satisfies my Longing (Jesus and his glory) 2) Some have never heard (the message of salvation) 3) For those who know it best (the old story made new because of God’s love). Start now thinking about how God has blessed you and been faithful to you in your journey through life.
OCTOBER 20, 2016 – Cor Trompetter presents “Mennonite Elites in the Frisian Southwest, 1580–1850,” on Thurs., Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m., at Elizabethtown College’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. The author of several books on social and economic history, Trompetter is also the deputy mayor of the county of Weststellingwerf in Friesland. My family and I want to say a BIG THANK YOU for all the kind words, prayers, and concern for all of us during my dad’s illness and his passing. Thank you for the many, many cards and a special thank you for the First Church members who attended my dad’s service. It meant a lot. We really appreciated the generous love offering that was given to us. It was a very nice gesture. I also appreciated your patience with me on the difficult days when I could not even talk about it. All of this truly shows how caring, giving, and thoughtful the members of First Church are. Thank you so much ~ Karen Bowman and family

CAMP EDER’S 38TH ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL ~ Sat., Oct. 15th, 9 am – 4 pm. Fall Festival is a Harvest & Heritage celebration designed for the whole family. Attractions include a benefit auction, food & craft vendors, music, games, and many other activities. An authentic Pit-Roasted Pork lunch is offered as the highlight of the day and will leave folks sharing memories for months and years to follow. Many other pioneer-style demonstrations are also featured. Things to do: Pit Roasted Pork & Turkey Meal. All you can eat! Pork and Turkey Meal which is cooked overnight buried in pits. No advance tickets are available. The tickets will be ONLY available at Fall Festival. Adults $12.00 and Kids (6-12) $ 7.00. Live Auction 9:30am Live Music, Apple Butter Making, Petting Zoo, Craft Vendors, Glass Blowing Demonstration, Kid’s Crafts, Kid’s Games, Bounce House, Food Court, Bake Sale, & Much More. PIES, PIES, PIES – CAMP EDER FALL FEST!
SING A SONG of sixpence a pocket full of rye, Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
Pies for the Fall Fest are what we need, So get out that rolling pin and do a good deed.
Cherry, apple, blueberry or peach – it’s all for the Fest! So remember – no blackbirds are needed – because it’s all for the best.
I do hope your pies will have fruit and not blackbirds! FALL FEST IS APPROACHING at Camp Eder. So any pie is acceptable that needs NO REFRIGERATION. The Festival is held on October 15 from 9 AM to 4 PM at Camp Eder. We are in need of 40 pies. Can you do it? Lets really roll out the dough $$$ Bring to the church lounge on Friday, October 14 by noon. Any questions, contact Kathy Kovacs.

TRICK OR TRUNK, Tues., Oct. 25th, ~ Don’t get Spooked! – Rain or Shine! 5:30 to 7:00pm/York First Church Parking Lot and Fellowship Hall. This is a church sponsored community event. WE NEED A LOT OF HELP!! Decorate a car, work in the kitchen, park cars, donate candy, donate money, or dress in a costume. We are planning for a large crowd so we will need a lot of volunteers. OCTOBER 28-30, 2016 – YORK FIRST COB ~ FALL SPIRITUAL RETREAT ~ October 28 – 30, 2016 -Mission statement: People dedicated to Spiritual Growth, Loving Relationships and Sacrificial Service
The theme for the Fall 2016 York First Church of the Brethren Retreat is “Roots and Branches: Building Better Relationships”. In these days of Facebook, tweets and text messages real, personal relationships can become few and far between. Our church’s mission statement above stresses the importance of “loving relationships”. What a great time to work on building your relationships during a fall weekend at Camp Eder. The time spent in Retreat will include worship, prayer, interactive presentations, breakout sessions, fun and fellowship. The Spiritual Enrichment Team is pleased to announce that Ken and Carol Gordon have agreed to lead us for this adult retreat. Ken and Carol provided the following information of their vision for the retreat:
We plan to talk about relationship history, provide some examples and discuss how to strengthen them. The sessions will be interactive; however the Friday evening session will be more individual work. Then we will build on that work throughout the weekend. An opening worship will begin each session using both contemporary and traditional music. Saturday afternoon will be free time for whatever the participants want to do. Camp Eder is beautiful at this time of the year.
We will be staying in the Tree of Peace lodge again this year. The Tree of Peace lodge has 8 motel-style rooms each containing one double bed, a set of bunk beds, a single trundle bed and a bathroom with a single shower. The lodge also has a full kitchen, and a spacious meeting room with a wood stove where all sessions will be held. Meals will be served in the Geigley Lodge, only a short walk away.
Plan to join your friends of First Church for this exciting, enriching time in retreat at Camp Eder. Sign up now to reserve your place. Registration fee of $90 per person includes five meals (Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast) and two nights lodging in the Tree of Peace lodge at Camp Eder. Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the narthex. While we encourage you to attend the entire weekend, day trippers or part-time attendees will be welcome. NOVEMBER 12, 2016 ~ INTERGENERATIONAL CHURCH GAME NIGHT, SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12TH at 6:30 pm in the Gym presented by the Fellowship Team. Bring your favorite board/card/etc. game to share! The game of Pickleball will also be happening on the pickleball court. This game is less strenuous than tennis, and is played with a paddle and a wiffle ball. Everyone can learn! Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. Come fine out what it is all about!!! Dessert & drinks provided! Questions?
